Obituary of Vera P Becker

Vera P. Becker, 98, a long-time Greenwich resident and more recently a resident of the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, was called home to our Lord Tuesday, March 24, 2015 with her loving family by her side. Born March, 12, 1917 in Rochester, NY, she was the daughter of the William E. and Violet A. Priestley of Hamlin, NY. Vera earned both a Bachelor’s degree in History and an additional Bachelor’s degree in Library Science. After a brief teaching stint in western New York, Vera became a Social Studies teacher and Librarian in the Greenwich Central School District. Vera then moved to the full time Librarian position in the Greenwich Elementary School, where she worked for over 20 years, retiring in 1982. Vera devoted her life to serving both the Lord, as a lifelong member of the Free Methodist Church, and her family. In her later years, Vera became a devoted seamstress, hand sewing thousands of doll clothes to donate to the Salvation Army at Christmas time. For this service, Vera was honored by the Salvation Army. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Ira V. Becker; son, William E. Becker; and daughter, Judith Ann Niesz. Survivors include her loving grandchildren, George Niesz and his wife Maureen of Greenwich, Mary Christine Dennett and her husband Douglas of Queensbury, and Kate Becker of Greenwich; Daughters-in-law Sarah Becker and Cynthia Sargent; 5 great grandchildren, Colm, Liam, and Norah Niesz of Greenwich; Hannah Dennett and Hadilyn Niesz of Queensbury; and many beloved nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place on May 2 at 1:00pm at the United Methodist Church in Greenwich, after which a private burial in the family plot at the Greenwich Cemetery will take place. Donations in Vera's name may be sent to the Greenwich Central School District Scholarship account at 10 Gray Avenue, Greenwich, New York, 12834 for the creation of a scholarship in her name.
