Obituary of Janet Rae Steindl

Janet R. Steindl, 74, longtime resident of Greenwich, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Myrtle Beach Manor in South Carolina, after a short battle with aggressive cancer. Janet was born Aug. 25, 1940 to William and Gladys Knierim on their family farm near Dunlap, Iowa. Upon graduation from Dow City-Arion High School, she enrolled at the Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1964, she joined the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and her first assignment sent her to Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. There she met Lieutenant Robert Steindl and they were united in marriage at the base chapel April 30, 1966. In 1976, Janet and her family settled in Greenwich and she became the night shift Charge Nurse at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge. She was later promoted to Head Nurse of the Maternity Ward. She led the effort to establish the Birthing Center, complete with private rooms decorated in a warm, country-home style. She personally helped deliver more than 2,800 bundles of joy before retiring in 1993. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Robert K. Steindl; her son, Robert W. and his wife, Michelle, and her grandchildren, Luke and Emily of Oak Hill, Virginia; her son, Michael and his wife, Wendy, and her grandchildren, Riley, Jenny and Megan of Greenwich; her twin sister, Jeanette Kuhlman of Dow City, Iowa; her brothers, William Knierim of Pocohantas, Iowa and Keith Knierim of Council Bluffs, Iowa; along with four nieces and two nephews. The family will receive family and friends from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 26 at Flynn Brothers Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich, where a brief memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at 2 p.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
