Obituary of Robert D. Baldwin

Robert D. Baldwin of Cossayuna Lake passed away peacefully at home Saturday, July 11, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old. Born October 24, 1927 in Syracuse, NY, Bob was the son of the late Donald Fenn Baldwin and Luella Macklin Baldwin. He was the grandson of Mary (Bain) Macklin and David Macklin, whose family farmed much of the west side of Cossayuna Lake. Bob grew up in Albany where he attended the Milne School and later Syracuse University. He served in the US Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean conflict. He quickly attained the rank of Sergeant and, after training at Fort Benning and Fort Sill, he was stationed overseas in Germany. Bob worked for New York Telephone Company for 39 years, rising through the ranks from line repairman to District Accounting Manager. He was transferred to Manhattan in 1961 and worked there for most of his career, while moving his family to White Plains, NY. Bob was one of the earliest computer systems specialists for New York Telephone. For many years, Bob served as volunteer chief financial officer for Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains. He also was a popular Cub Scout leader there. After retiring to Cossayuna Lake in 1986, Bob was very active in the Cossayuna Lake Improvement Association. He was instrumental in starting the first weed control, weed harvesting, water testing, and septic testing programs for Cossayuna. For several years he served on the water quality committee for the Washington County Soil and Water District. In 2015 Bob received the New York State Lake Stewards Award for his work at Cossayuna. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Ethel “Mickey” Baldwin. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Beverly (Lennox) Baldwin of Cossayuna; three sons Robert Baldwin Jr. of Mount Kisco, NY; Jay Baldwin of Dover, DE; Todd (Sandy) Baldwin of Saugerties, NY; two grandchildren Lee and Renee Baldwin; and one sister Shirley Hartman of Salt Lake City, UT. There will be no calling hours at the request of the family. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the North Cambridge (“Stump”) Church, Stump Church Road, North Cambridge, NY 12834, with the Rev. Virginia Cornell officiating. Friends, acquaintances and family are all invited to celebrate Robert's life A reception will follow at 1pm at the Christ The King Spiritual Life Center, 575 Burton Rd, Greenwich, NY, 12834. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robert Baldwin’s name may be made to the North Cambridge (Stump) Methodist Church or a charity of the donors choosing.
