Obituary of Robert A. Given

Robert August Given, 91, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Washington Center in Argyle. Born May 14, 1924 in Buckfield, Maine, he was the son of the late Thomas and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Given. Robert was a graduate of Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maine and also a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, Maine where he graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He attended the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck Long Island. Upon his graduation from the Academy, Robert sailed around the world as a Merchant Marine stopping at many ports along the way. Robert was employed by the Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, Maine for 20 years. In 1966 Bob took a job with Hollingsworth & Vose Company in Clarks Mills, NY where he was a Mechanical Engineer until he retired in 1984. Robert served Hollingsworth & Vose as a private consultant until 1990. After retiring, Bob turned his hobby of restoring antique woodstoves into a little business. Many people and businesses have Bob's restored antique woodstoves in them. He was an avid gardener and loved tending his apple orchard. He enjoyed hosting his annual family apple-picking/cider-making event. Bob loved hunting, fishing, and being outside. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Given. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Betty Given of Argyle; his son, Peter (Linda) Given of Dayton Shores, FL, two daughters, Katherine Given (Charles) Tracy of Argyle and Louise Given (Jeffrey) Dearstyne of Albany; granddaughter, Jennifer Tracy of Boston, MA; grandson, Michael Tracy of Rotterdam, NY; and his brother, James Given of Florida. A graveside service will be held June 4, 2016 in the Greenwich Cemetery with a time to be announced at a later date. There will be no calling hours.
