Obituary of John Richards
~~John W. Richards, 70, a resident of Spring Rd., in Quaker Springs, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017 at his home.
Born November 28, 1947 in Saratoga Springs, NY he was the son of the late Clarence Richards and Arvessa Oakley Atwell.
Mr. Richards was a Combat Veteran serving in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division Infantry as a Squad Leader and then in 1969 as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Dix, NJ. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Air Medal, and many other medals. He worked 11 years with the National Guard as a policeman at Stratton Air Force Base in Scotia, and also for Fulton County Corrections as a Deputy Sheriff. He was involved with the Harness Horse Business until 1982, was a member of US Trotting Assoc. and NYS Racing Assoc. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of several hunting camps, enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing poker and the Racino.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 490 in Stillwater and the VFW #420 in Saratoga Springs.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Patrick Richards and nephew Matthew Michael.
Survivors include his wife Bonnie Ballone of Quaker Springs; son, Sean Richards of Amsterdam; daughter, Tiffany Southard of SC; stepson, James Ballone of Florida; stepdaughter, Shelise Kramer of Saratoga Springs; 2 brothers, Michael (Wanda) Richards of Greenfield Center and David Richards of Waterford; 2 sisters, Sandy Gailor of Arizona and Barbara Mikuta of Wisconsin; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30pm, Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville, NY 12871. Burial will follow at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 2:30 pm.
Friends may call on Tuesday at the funeral home from 11:30am – 1:30pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Tuesday following the burial at the American Legion Hall, 1 American Legion Rd., Stillwater, NY 12170.
