Daniel C. "Danny" Thomas

–

Cambridge, New York

Daniel “Danny” C. Thomas, a committed husband, a beloved father, a treasured grandfather (“Pap”), and a revered friend to many, peacefully made his journey home on October 1, 2026. A lifelong dairy farmer and crop producer, a master operator, a gifted mechanic, and an accomplished tractor puller, Danny was a man who personified the virtues of hard work, integrity, honesty, discipline, excellence, and friendship.

Danny grew up as a dairy farmer in Cambridge, NY, on two different farms.

Danny and Olive began dating in high school and the pair graduated from Cambridge Central School shortly after that. While still kids themselves, they married and started a family, building a life together. In 1980, Dan and Olive purchased the farm from Dan’s parents and started an agricultural partnership together, which lasted for 46 years. Surviving all the highs and lows of farming required true grit and a lot of faith. With the spirit and drive of two very disciplined young people, Danny and Olive worked tirelessly together, in an equal partnership, to create a prosperous business that defied others’ expectations and laid the foundation for a legacy that would endure for generations.

DO-View Farm, as they called their family dairy farm, was more than just a business to them, it was their life’s work. Each family member played important roles on the farm throughout the decades too, working and contributing to the farm’s growth. Their son, Andrew, joined forces with them, working side by side for many years, always moving the farm in the direction of progress and innovation. If there was one aspect of farming that Dan identified with most, it would be the land. Dan was always looking to purchase or rent more land, to expand the size of their farm. There was nothing Dan valued and loved more than the land he worked on that farm. Together, Dan and Andrew went to great lengths and took great pride in transforming the land to make it better. Improving a piece of land was so gratifying to them. The clearing and tiling was all in an effort to produce more viable farmland. Dan also brought this same attention to detail to the management of the farm. He was known to be meticulous about keeping his farm, tractors, and equipment clean, well-maintained, and in top, working condition. Dan set the bar high for himself and anyone who worked with him. Given his interest in land stewardship and conservation, Dan became one of the first members of The Cambridge Town Planning Board, which he proudly served on for over 20 years.

Danny’s favorite pastime and passion was tractor pulling, which is a competitive motorsport he was very committed to. He started tractor pulling as a young man, with out-of-field tractors in farm pulls at local fairs and later began Super Stock Tractor Pulling in 1991 when he purchased and redesigned an International 1066, affectionately named, “Satisfaction.” Tractor Pulling at this level was truly one of the greatest loves of Danny’s life. As a long-time member of The New York Tractor Puller’s Association (NYTPA), he was a NYTPA Super Stock Points Champion six times and earned the title of “Puller of The Year,” garnering him respect and admiration from both peers and his fans. Although a formidable competitor on the track, Danny enjoyed the culture of the pulling circuit and formed lasting friendships in that community. He enjoyed socializing with fellow pullers as much as he enjoyed winning trophies. Danny pulled Satisfaction all across New York State, and in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and even in Canada a few times, but no hook mattered more to Danny than pulling his tractor in front of the hometown crowd at The Washington County Fair, in front of family and friends, where he entertained crowds for 52 consecutive years.

As much as Danny was called to be a farmer and loved his work and found such joy in doing his hobbies like snowmobiling and tractor pulling, he was aware that he would have none of these things in his life if not for his devoted and loving wife, Olive, his three children, Ollie, Sarah, and Andrew, and his nine grandchildren. Each of them are a part of his rich heritage. As Danny wanted it, Andrew and his wife, Sandy, purchased the farm in 2026, now “Thomas Farms,” and will carry on the legacy Dan and Olive built by keeping the farm in the family for generations to come.

Danny is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Olive (Herrington) Thomas and their devoted children, Ollie (Mark) Koopmann, Sarah (Ben) Yurschak, and Andrew (Sandra) Thomas; Grandchildren: Daniel Yurschak, Dehlia Koopmann, Ezden Koopmann, Travis Yurschak, Isaak Koopmann, Evan Yurschak, Weston Thomas, Adaline Thomas, and Emmett Thomas; Brother, Douglas Thomas and his wife Linda; Sister, Diane Barno and her husband Joseph; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eleanor Herrington and Don (Lillian) Herrington; brother and sisters-in-law, Howard (Susan) Herrington, Patricia Gibson, Cheryl (Lenny) Benson, Donna (Earl) Horton, Sue (Squirt) Henderson, DJ (Debra) Herrington, Kate (Dean) LeBarron, Bill Herrington, and Bryan (Lauren) Herrington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Thomas and Irene (Gillis) Thomas and sister-in-law, Sandy Herrington Thomas.

Danny will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and big personality. He also had a gift for nicknaming people with names that really stuck. If you ever needed help, you didn’t need to ask Danny Thomas twice. He was always willing to help, never expecting anything in return. Danny knew what mattered in his life: His Wife, Family, The Farm, and Friends.

Family and friends are invited to join us in a Celebration of Life gathering on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 1:30 PM, on the family farm, located at 817 County Route 59, Cambridge, NY 12816.
