Michael T. Russert

–

Cambridge, New York

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Michael T. Russert's passing on October 2, 2026, at his residence. Mike was born in Buffalo, NY on January 4, 1942, to the late Francis M. and Marie Russert.

Mike was a beacon of knowledge, wisdom, and love. Michael was not just a man; he was an institution of lifelong learning and a pillar of his beloved community in Cambridge, New York.

Michael, or as many affectionately knew him, Mike, was a devoted educator, having dedicated the majority of his professional life to the noble vocation of teaching. He was a revered 6th-grade teacher in the Buffalo City School District and later at the Hoosick Falls Central School before his retirement. He was more than just a teacher, he was a mentor, guide, and friend to many of his students. A passionate historian, his fascination with the stories of Veterans who served our country led him to interview many of them. His love for history also manifested in his contribution to several Civil War books as a reviewer and editor. He was also the proud author of "We Were Marched Hither and Thither," a critically acclaimed book about the 123rd NY fighting during the Gettysburg Campaign.

Outside of his professional life, Mike was a man of many passions, he was a supporter of the Buffalo Bills, and he loved his family deeply, was an avid reader, a gifted writer, and an enthusiastic runner. The joy he found in sharing his profound knowledge of history was evident in the many talks he gave throughout the area.

His legacy is survived by his loving wife, Judith (Buck) Russert of Cambridge and his son, Cullen Russert of Nashville, TN.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Francis J. Russert.

Mike's wishes were for services to be private at the convenience of the family.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Community Hospice of Saratoga & Washington County, 179 Lawrence St, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866 or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research at www.michaeljfox.org

Michael's life was a testament to his commitment to education, his love for history, and his love for his family. His profound impact on the lives he touched will never be forgotten.
