Greenwich, New York
Norman Francis Gates, born on the 29th of November 1932 in Lehighton, PA, passed away at the age of 91 on October 22nd, 2024. Norman was a resident of Greenwich, New York, a place he called home for many years. A proud self-employed engineer by profession, Norman was deeply invested in his work and was admired for his precision and dedication.
Faith played a significant role in Norman's life. An active participant in his local Catholic church, he found solace and strength in his beliefs. As we mourn his passing, we remember the words from the book of Matthew 5:4, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Norman was also a loyal patriot, having served in the United States Navy, stationed at Pearl Harbor. His service is a testament to his love for his country.
Outside of work and service, Norman was a man of many interests. He had a profound love for fly fishing, a hobby he pursued in locations from Greenwich to Canada and Maine. Norman inherited his passion for the Philadelphia Eagles from his father. He started going to their games at the tender age of 10 and was a 64 year plus season ticket holder. As an adult, Norman loyally traveled from Greenwich to Philadelphia for games. He also had a soft spot for college football, always rooting for his favorites, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Norman loved constructing and flying RC model planes, his favorite being the P38-Yippee. Norman was honest, loving, and quite the character, who also enjoyed listening to marching band music.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank A. and Martha (Mroczkowski) Gates, sister, Doris (Gates) Warmouth and brother, Robert Gates.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Susann (Michael) Wilkinson; son, Rusty (Christina) Gates; grandchildren, Kailee Wilkinson, Kenzie Wilkinson (Joseph White), Park (Margaret) Gates, Preston Gates; great-grandchildren, Myles Wilkinson, Mia and Jay White, and his four-legged friends, who gave him much comfort in the past few months, Theo, Remi, Abbi, Ami & Lexi “aka” Fat Cat.
His family was the cornerstone of his life. He will be remembered fondly for his steadfast loyalty to both his kin and his interests.
His life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 4th, 2024, at 10am at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Greenwich, New York, 12834.
Burial with military honors will follow at 12pm at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY, 12834.
