Roberta Allyn (Roosa) Alexander

–

Greenwich, New York

World traveler, knitting extraordinaire Roberta Allyn (Roosa) Alexander passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2026, at the grand age of 96.

She was born on May 23, 1930, in Middletown, NY. After graduating from Congers High School in 1947 she immediately went off to nursing school. She graduated from Middletown Hospital School of nursing and was very proud of her work as a registered nurse. She cared for patients at: The New York State Rehabilitation Hospital (now Helen Hayes Hospital), Summit Park Hospital, Saratoga Hospital, and Mary McClellan Hospital.

Once her children were grown, Roberta worked on and earned her bachelor's degree from Southern Vermont College. She then proceeded to help educate the next generation of nurses at the School of Nursing at Putnam Memorial Hospital (now Southwestern Vermont Medical Center) and WSWHE BOCES in Saratoga.

Roberta was a lifelong Girl Scout first as a Brownie and then finally as President of the Adirondack Girl Scout Council. She served as a troop leader in both Rockland and Washington Counties and served on the Council for many years. Roberta was awarded the highest honor in Girl Scouting, the Thanks Badge, given to active registered adults whose service has an ongoing, exceptional impact on scouting.

Roberta was an accomplished knitter since she was a child, and her children fondly share her hand knit sweaters with their children and grandchildren. She was also an accomplished quilter and a longtime member of the Highland Quilt Guild where she met her dear friend Iva. In fact, she was known to sometimes raise a bit of cain with Iva at quilt camp in the Adirondacks. Roberta enjoyed regaling everyone with stories about her travels around the U.S., Europe, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, Spain, Ireland, and elsewhere.

Most importantly, Roberta led a life deeply rooted in her faith and was very active with the Catholic Daughter's of America at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenwich, also serving as teacher, eucharistic minister, lector, and lay minister.

She is survived by her children Patricia (James) Buickerood, Michael Alexander, Melissa (Steve) Skellie, Donna (Michael) Winkelman, Paul Alexander; grandchildren Daniel, Rachel, Madeline, Michayla, Ryan; great grandchildren Alexandra, Eden, and Wren; Sisters-in-law Carol Roosa and Merry Reid and several nieces and nephews.

Roberta is predeceased by her husband, Francis “Mike” Houston Alexander and siblings Richard Roosa, Sr, Gracie (Roosa) Wentland, and David Roosa.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff from Home Instead and Community Hospice of Saratoga, especially Lisa, Susan, Karen, Eileen, Jen, and Tracy.

Roberta's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 16, 2026, at St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich with Father Joseph Pham officiating. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband Francis at 1 pm at the Saratoga National Cemetery following her mass.
