Obituary of Jean D. Casey
Jean D. Casey, 81, a former resident of Schuylerville, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in Argyle surrounded by her family. Born April 23, 1929 in Coveville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Riley Burton and Asenath Jane Thompson DeVoe. Jean grew up along the Hudson River shore, helping her father with his beach and boating business. She held a lifelong love of the Hudson River and often called it âMy River.â She was a graduate of Schuylerville High School and married Lawrence Patrick Casey on December 16, 1950. She spent many of her younger years taking care of her family. Even with all the chores, Jean did find time to watch her âsoaps,â and she also held a job on Saturdays, a job not many women hold: that of a garbage truck driver. Providing a trash pick-up service to those living in the country, she oversaw the âgarbage runâ and many of her family and childrenâs friends were hired to help at one time or another. Many of her kidsâ friends called her âMaâ or âMaude,â and she always welcomed them at their home. Jean absolutely loved the actor Tom Selleck of âMagnum, PIâ fame; she was extremely proud to own an autographed Stephen King novel, âChristineâ; and she enjoyed playing cards with her family and drinking Bokar coffee. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking. She also loved to feed the birds and work on crossword puzzles. After her kids got older, Jean took a job outside of the house, a position she would hold for over twenty years. Starting as deputy town clerk for the Town of Saratoga in 1982, she became town clerk in 1984. She loved her post at the town hall and spoke highly of the people she worked with and the people they served. She felt honored to be elected time after time to this position. After Lawrence died in 2004, Jeanâs health deteriorated, and she was placed at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in December 2006 after a hip replacement. Jeanâs family would like to thank the staff of Pleasant Valley for the excellent care given to her while she resided there. They are deeply grateful to all at this fine facility. Survivors include her children, Larry (Deb) Casey of Eagle River, Alaska; Dave (Barb) Casey of Mechanicville; Riley T. Casey of Anchorage, Alaska; Linda (Jim) Still of Stone Ridge, NY; Nancy A. Casey of Watervliet, NY; Megan (Roger) Norton of Bloomingburg, NY; her beloved granddaughter, Sarah Casey of Cambridge, NY; 1 brother, Riley DeVoe (Carol) of Stillwater; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 1-3pm on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. Jeanâs family would also like to invite all friends and family to join them for a get-together after calling hours at the Community Room in the Town Hall (the former middle school on Broadway). Please join us for some light fare and remembrances. Memorials can be made in Jeanâs memory to the Alzheimerâs Association (Adirondack Chapter), PO Box 4091, Queensbury, NY 12804.
