Obituary of Martin "Al" Hakala
Martin âAlâ Hakala, 90, a resident of Sloan Dr., died Friday evening at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness. Born February 1, 1921 in Shushan, NY he had been manager for the Ft. Edward Agway for over 30 years. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII and was a member of the Greenwich American Legion. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Greenwich. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed attending his grandchildrenâs sporting events. He will be remembered for his efforts in keeping his lawn immaculate. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Bill Hakala. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Hakala of Greenwich; 4 daughters, Diane (Charles) Kelley, Jo (Dave) Roe, and Barbara White, all of Greenwich, and Beverly Saunders of Queensbury; 1 son, Steven (Karen) Saunders of Hartford; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1pm Monday, May 9, 2011 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich with Rev. Virginia Cornell, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge. Friends may call on Monday from 12 noon to 1pm prior to the service. Memorials can be made in his memory to the Easton Greenwich Rescue Squad or the charity of oneâs choice.
