Obituary of John Martin

PFC John William Martin was born in Northumberland, NY on February 2, 1927, the second son of George and Nellie Baker Martin. He was declared MIA on December 2, 1950 in Korea.

 

PFC Martin was a veteran of WWII serving with the Marine Corps and was a member of the National Guard Co. L 105 Infantry in Saratoga Springs.  He enlisted in the Army in April of 1950 with the Medical Company 32nd Infantry Regiment 7th Infantry Division.  He was lost while engaged in combat operations against the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Forces in the area of the Chosin Reservoir on December 2, 1950.  He was listed MIA then KIA on December 31, 1953.

 

Martin was awarded the Purple Heart, the Army Good Combat Ribbon, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean War Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

 

He had been a member of the David Nevins Fire Department in Victory Mills, NY.

 

PFC Martin’s remains are being accompanied home by his great grand nephew Airman Schuyler Dolton.

 

He is predeceased by his parents, as well as two sisters, Irma Martin and Eleanor Santore; brothers, Charles (Pepper) Martin, Douglas Martin, Robert Martin; two nephews, Craig Martin and Michael Martin.

 

Survivors include five nieces and five nephews, as well as 20 grand nieces and nephews.

 

Services will be held at 1pm Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. Visitation and awards will be held from 11-1pm prior to the service.

 

Burial with full military honors will follow at 2pm in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
