I met Cruz in Albany during one of the low periods of his life. We had some long talks, and I had him over dinner a few times. He seemed to be surprised to eat at the table with Devan and me. We all drank Coca-Cola. I asked him if he knew WHY he wanted to drink (and use drugs) although he never discussed drugs.
He was a beautiful guy and a beautiful person with his bright blue eyes and golden hair.
I insisted he do his laundry here to give him a fresh start. I wish I had been able to do more.
My youngest brother died before his 23rd birthday, also after a long period of heavy drug use. That happened more than 50 years ago, but I still mourn Tommy. Now I will mourn Cruz too.

When I met Cruz, I immediately knew he was a very special person, a genuinely kind and thoughtful soul. He was a friendly face in a terribly unfriendly world. I feel blessed for having had the chance to get to know him. My heart is heavy for those closest to him.
May peace replace the pain and may the warmest memories be cherished. Cruz was a truly good man and will be dearly missed.
My deepest condolences.

Please accept my thoughts of love and healing at this heartbreaking time. I do not know your family, or your beloved son, but your strength in sharing his struggle with addiction, is courageous and inspiring. We all know someone who is battling demons of addiction, and to bring light to it brings people together and lets them know that they aren't alone. Thank you. Peace and strength to you all and peace to your Cruz.

I also do not know you and I did not know your handsome son. I cannot begin to imagine your pain but you have my deepest sympathies and prayers for some healing. I was so touched by your braveness in the sharing your son's story and his piercing blue eyes that I was compelled to reach out to you. You may have helped to awaken someone from the same affliction . May God bless the soul of your beloved son and deliver him to a place where there is no pain or suffering. And God bless your family and let them remember only the wonderful memories they shared with Cruz.

I’m so sorry for your loss and I pray that God wraps you in His comfort and peace.
I didn’t know Cruz, I don’t know you, but my son also struggled with addiction. As a parent who has been through the horrors of addiction with her child, while some looked on and judged him inaccurately, I commend your loving honesty in your sweet son’s obituary. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!

I am so sorry for your loss. May your faith carry you through this time of deep sorrow.
I know life will go on. But your life was changed FOREVER.
Through this you will learn everyone has a story. May your memories carry you through the waves of grief that will come.
Let God be your comforter. God is faithful. I am a witness.
Love, Arletta
