My condolences to John Farndell's family, DHCR colleagues and community of friends. A good architect's legacy lives on in the homes they designed. I remember him showing such pride in the building sketches on the office wall. Thank you to John for the work he did for the families of New York. Peace, Nora McDowell

My heart hurt as soon as I heard we lost John. So special in many ways I cannot do him justice to mention everything. Every conversation was a joy, every moment in person I enjoyed throughout the 30 years of knowing him. He was also so fantastic to my mom even after when his own dad passed. He called her every week at minimum always giving my mom a warm feeling. Some of my conversations with John were so helpful talking about construction on many things. Some of my favorite ones were on my sister’s house with a pool inside it as a living room. John was so helpful to us with structure and HVAC advice too. On the last project he gave helpful advice for my bathroom remodeling being so great at delivering insightful details. If we were out for a meal, he would insist on buying even with other protesting. He would always put himself last to help others no matter what. This generosity was just one of the few wonderful characteristics about him. If I had to think up any regrets in my life, it would be I didn’t visit him enough. With lots of love to all of his family, Mace and Pam.

Betty Jo this is your Cousin Ornery Jack. When ever I think of John I have Flash Backs of the time you and John came to Mustang, OK and it was somewhere around July 21st and Martha and I took you and John to the Oklahoma Bombing Memorial. We spent about three hours there and John was impressed, anyway when we decided to leave it was getting HOT (normal temperature for Oklahoma) when we got into the car I though John was going to pass out cuz the Thermometer in his car was reading somewhere around 110* and I haven't been able too get him to come back to Oklahoma sense??? Love Ya and most assuredly will miss John

To Bette, your children and grandchildren,
For as long as I knew him and worked with him, John was my friend; what I know is that John loved you Bette deeply and his fondest wish was to provide for his family, have a happy retirement and sit under his trees and enjoy a full life each of you. I am so sorry that he was taken away from you. It wasn't supposed to happen.
As the newest hire to the DSU in 1993, my primary assignment was to assist John with all his many, many NYC projects. He and I went on day trips to the Fordham and later the Manhattan offices of DHCR. He showed me the ropes on taking the train to the city, getting rides to the regional office, introducing me to the NYC region staff, meeting with applicants and awardees and getting back to Albany by 4:45. He was one of the hardest working guys I've known in my work life; a bulldozer in tackling his very heavy workload. He was and is still very dear to me.
Though he's no longer physically here with us, we each still have our relationship with him. We still can talk to him anytime, ask him what he thinks about something and I guarantee that you will hear his voice telling you just what he thinks, as always. This I believe.
With so much love to you all,
Barbara Wigzell

John was a great friend and co-worker. I wish I knew him longer, as he had so much to share. As an architect on many of my early projects, he helped me learn and in the process we became fast friends. We laughed together often - and it started on my first visit with his countdown-to-retirement clock! I will miss him greatly, as we all missed his presence in the office the past few years - I will be pained to know I can’t stop by for a quick laugh. I wish he had more time in his retirement with Bett. He talked often of his deep love for her. Rest In Peace dear John.

I am so sad to hear of my friend’s passing. John was a co-worker at NYS Homes and Community Renewal. He was a hard working, friendly and helpful man. He and I became good friends when our boys were in the Service at the same time in Iraq. We shared our fears, our pride, and stories, pictures, and news from and about our boys. He also gave me strength, hope, and encouragement during the devastating events surrounding my daughter! He never gave up on people and was always there to lift me up. His wife and I got to know each other briefly. John made it known Bette was/is the love of his life and his rock! I pray for strength and comfort for Bette and her family! Rest In Peace my friend and thank you for being you!

God gained another angel. John was a true gem in his field and a friend. I will surely miss him, his laugh and sense of humor. John, here’s hoping there is those peanut butter bars in heaven. Miss you my friend.

Unfortunately, I didn't know John all my life but I certainly knew him long enough to know that he was a good & caring man. I always looked forward to seeing him every Sunday in church & getting his big smile & hello. God bless you all.
