Obituary of Mary A. Peters

s Gruner Peters, 93, a resident of Pearl St., died Monday, March 29, 2010 at her home after a long illness. Born March 16, 1917 in New Lebanon, NY she was the daughter of the late Fred Gruner and Emma Gruner Houseman. Mary was a graduate of Schuylerville Central School Class of 1935 and the Eastman School of Business. She was secretary of her class at SCS and for over 70 years administered the Raymond Carey Scholarship Fund for the school. A secretary her whole life, she worked at United Board & Carton Corp. and then at Schuylerville Central School. She loved children and was a former 4-H leader and a member of the Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Committee. She was also a member of the St. Anne/ Rosary Society at Notre Dame-Visitation Church , Court Stella Maris # 396 CDA and a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, ceramics and gardening. When her children were young she made many of their clothes and their doll clothes. Later in life she learned ceramics and made many beautiful items that her family will cherish for years. Mary loved flowers and her gardens were always her pride. For many years she contributed to area flower shows. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her step-father, Charles Houseman, her sister Ruth (Clarence) Sanders, and her brother, Earl Gruner. Survivors include her husband James J. Peters, Sr. of Schuylerville with whom she celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last year; her children, Ann Marie Wright; James J. Peters Jr. (Sandra) and Patricia Joan Peters, all of Schuylerville; her sister-in-law Marie Peters of Schuylerville; a very special niece Margie (Ed) Miller of Ft. Edward; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1pm Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Notre Dame Visitation Church with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Schuylerville. Friends may call on Wednesday from 11:30-1pm at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville, prior to the service. Memorials can be made to Dollars for Scholars, c/o Joan Alheim, Saratoga St., Schuylerville; the Parkinson’s Assoc., or Hospice of Saratoga 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 The family would like to extend their appreciation to Donna and Gloria DeLuca, Ruth Miner-Cooney, Margaret Warner and granddaughter Kelly Peters who were Mary’s caregivers during her illness; their devotion to her allowed Mary to remain at home with her family. Also to Dr. Kevin Costello for his expert care and the Hospice family.
