Obituary of Herbert F. Thomas

Herbert F. Thomas, 81, a resident of Route 29 in Grangerville, died Wednesday, April 07, 2010 at his home after a long illness. Born February 28, 1929 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Jared and Ruth Swartwout Thomas Sr. He and his wife Gloria started Home of Quality Egg in Grangerville and they ran the poultry farm along with their son Lynnwood and his wife Phyllis for many years. In later years, Herb continued selling eggs from his home. He was a member and past president of the Saratoga County Farm Bureau, was chairman of the State Poultry Committee, a member of the Egg Advisory Board for the American Farm Bureau, a past Master of the Saratoga Grange, served on the EOC Board, was president of the Rural Preservation Committee, was responsible for signing contract to build veterans houses, had served as co-president of the Old Saratoga Historical Association, a member of the Quaker Springs Sunshiners Senior Citizens, and was a member of Schuylerville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Lynnwood Thomas who died February 15, 2010, 2 brothers, Jared Thomas Jr., and Melvin Thomas; 3 sisters, Lillian Raymond, Winifred Russell, and Doris White; and 1 grandson, Jeffrey D. Thomas Survivors include his wife of 63 years Gloria Wood Thomas of Schuylerville; 2 daughters, Laurelyn (Louis) Flanders of Greenwich and Cynthia Freiberger (Al Hartwell) of Gansevoort; daughter-in-law-, Phyllis Thomas of Schuylerville; 1 sister, Shirley VanArnum of Saratoga Springs; 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews A funeral service will be held at 10 am Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Schuylerville United Methodist Church,with Rev. Bonnie Bates, officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Schuylerville. Friends may call on Friday from 4-7pm at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. Following the interment service, friends and family are invited to a reception at the church fellowship hall. Memorials can be made in his memory to the Schuylerville United Methodist Church or to Community Hospice of Saratoga.
