John DeGregory

Obituary of John E. DeGregory

John E. DeGregory, 82, a resident of County Rte. 68, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Saratoga Hospital surrounded by his loving family. John was a US Naval Veteran and was honorably discharged in 1958. He was mainly assigned to a ship named the Fulton but he also traveled with the Naval Band as a trumpet player. After his discharge, he worked in construction and various other jobs prior to being hired in maintenance at the Hollingsworth and Vose Company in 1968, from which he retired as the Superintendent in 1998. Outside of work, John was a very active person. John was involved in Little League (OSAA), Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, and coached his five boys for over 25 years. As president of OSAA, he worked countless hours on fields and the organization to give every player a great baseball experience that they could build upon. He was an avid bowler for 50 plus years and often carried high average in his leagues. He was a fierce competitor and a great pressure bowler, but he was also a great sportsman, often winning the sportsmanship award for his leagues. Later on in life, he became an avid golfer, with most of his time spent at the Battenkill Country Club playing golf with his sons, the rest of his family and friends. His two favorite things were dancing with his wife, and going to games or events of his sons, grandkids, and relatives. At a wedding, it was fun to watch John and Josie on the dance floor as they moved with such grace and ease. Once the dancing started they rarely sat down. As far as games and events go, it would be hard to estimate how many they attended together. If there was a game or event happening that a relation involved, they were going to be there no matter where it was, big role or small role, played or didn’t play, because family supports family. John was always a happy go lucky guy who had plenty of stories to tell, and a great big smile on his face. He was a tremendous husband, father, co-worker, and friend to so many people along the way. His tremendous smile, laugh, compassion and spirit will be with us forever. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret (Josie) DeGregory of Saratoga Springs; his 5 sons, Daniel (Sandra) DeGregory of Greenwich, John J. DeGregory and Nichole Cristaldi of Gansevoort, Arthur (Bernadette) DeGregory of Saratoga Springs, James (Kimberly) DeGregory of Saratoga Springs, and Timothy (Brenda) DeGregory of Saratoga Springs; 15 grandchildren, Shannon (Theo) Celani, Matthew DeGregory, Joahna Petralia, Dani DeGregory, Vincent (Erin) Boivin, Chad DeGregory, Ashley (Dillon) Jones, Michael DeGregory, Ariel DeGregory, Dayne DeGregory, Adam DeGregory, Alex DeGregory, Mira DeGregory, Abbey DeGregory, and Andrew DeGregory; 7 great grandchildren, Ella Celani, Charlotte Celani, Aliyah Burth, Mya Burth, Jackson Boivin, Cooper Boivin, and Dexter Jones; 2 sisters, Margaret(Peg) Myers and Patricia (Pat) Duschaine; sister and brother-in-laws, Almena Hathaway, Don and Lil Hathaway, Bob and Peg Hathaway, and Ed and Jeanne Gailor; Aunt Margaret (Dolly) Izzo, cousins, John Natale, Francis Keyoe and 27 nieces and nephews.
