Obituary of Michael "Nick" Karp


Michael “Nick” Karp, 91, a lifelong resident of Greenwich and most recently of Ellavilile, GA (while living with the Langlois family) passed away peacefully Friday, November 10, 2017 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.
 
He was born January 7, 1926 in Stillwater, NY, to the late Stephen and Mary Nussell Karp.
 
Nick served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War.  Nick was commander of the American Legion and VFW Post #7251, he served as Greenwich fire department chief for 15 years and was supervisor for the town of Greenwich for 16 years.  He owned and operated Karp's Texaco Service Station in Greenwich with his brothers and then later owned M& H Auto Service.  Nick loved fishing, hunting, cooking and working in his vegetable gardens, in addition to dancing and telling stories, all while showing his amazing smile and larger than life personality.  During the winter months enjoyed  traveling to Florida with his companion Betty Dixson. 
 
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Hazel Nolan Karp; brothers Peter, Wesley, Steve and Harry; sisters Rose Fryer, Katherine White and Anna Flynn.
 
He is survived by sister-in-law Carol Karp; companion Betty Dixson; several nieces and nephews.
 
A mass of a Christian burial will be held at 9am Friday, November 17, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Church, in Greenwich with the Rev. Martin Fisher officiating.
 
Burial with full military honors will follow the mass at 10:30am at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.  After services at the cemetery family and friends are invited to the Greenwich VFW Post #7251, 63 Abeel Ave, Greenwich, NY, 12834 for a reception. 
 
There will be no prior calling hours.
 
Donations in Nick’s name may be made to the Greenwich Fire Department, 60 Hill St, Greenwich, NY, 12834
