Obituary of Matilda J. Nolte

~~Matilda Jean Dohen Nolte, 99, a longtime resident of Schuylerville, passed away Friday, November 24, 2017 at Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Born June 5, 1918 in New York City, Mrs. Nolte grew up in Woodlawn and was the daughter of the late William J. and Elizabeth Gutscher Dohen.

Mrs. Nolte graduated in 1936 from St. Barnabus High School in Woodlawn, NY.  She attended Hunter College and went on to work for Catholic Charities.  During WWII she met her husband Norbert at a NY Catholic Charities Social.  They were married August 12, 1942.

Following the celebration of their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Nolte resided in the Bronx during which time Mrs. Nolte volunteered at NY Foundling Hospital.  In 1947, they moved upstate to Fort Hunter.  Mrs. Nolte was particularly pleased when they relocated to WWII Veterans’ temporary housing in Amsterdam where there was electricity and running water.  In 1950, they moved to Tribes Hill, and in 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Nolte moved to Easton before finally settling into their home in Schuylerville where they raised their 7 children and lived for many years.

Mrs. Nolte was a devoted wife and mother and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She was an avid reader and for many years was the bookkeeper at the Schuylerville Public Library.  She possessed excellent typing skills, for which her husband and children are forever grateful.  Since Mrs. Nolte’s faith was an important part of her life, she taught religious education for many years.  Her love for the opera and classical music often took her to venues such as the Met, Lincoln Center, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and the Spa Little Theater.  Mrs. Nolte was also a volunteer usher at SPAC for many summers. Additionally, she enjoyed her annual summer vacations in Wellfleet, MA.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 75 years Norbert B. Nolte; her son, Norbert J. Nolte; 4 sisters, Elizabeth Dohen, Dorothy Dohen, Eveleen Dohen Gallagher, and Cecelia Dohen Gregory.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Glenina) Nolte, Andrew (Kathleen) Nolte, Maureen (Neil) Muscatiello, Jean (Peter) Hosford, Susan Nolte (Lee Grunes), Christopher Nolte (Carla Suna); daughter-in-law Kathy Lind; 14 grandchildren, Neil A. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30am Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating.  A committal service will follow at 12 noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Memorials can be made in her memory to General Schuyler Emergency Squad, PO Box 111, Schuylerville, NY 12871 or Schuylerville Public Library, 52 Ferry St., Schuylerville, NY 12871.

The family would like to thank the staff and friends at Wesley Health Care Center, particularly the devoted caretakers on Springs 2, and the General Schuyler Emergency Squad.
