Daniel Flynn

Obituary of Daniel M. Flynn

Daniel M. Flynn, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday night, January 13, 2018 while at his home on Prospect Street.

Dan, or Danny, as his friends and family referred to him, was born on September 29, 1960 in Cambridge, New York.

He was the son of James A. Flynn and Anna Karp Flynn, both of whom joyfully welcome him to eternal life.

Danny graduated from Greenwich Central School in 1978 and from Siena College, Loudonville, in 1982 with a Bachelor’s of Art degree in history.  Although the thought of teaching interested him, Dan chose a completely different career path in banking.  It began in 1980 while still in college, when he accepted a position with Chemical Bank, later to become Norstar Bank and eventually, Glens Falls National Bank, from where he retired in mid 2014 due to complications from his chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). He was grateful for the 35 years that he spent there and enjoyed the company of many fabulous co-workers and customers, forming friendships with many of them.

Danny’s passion was sports, from participation in all of them in his youth, to faithfully watching them his entire life.  He was an avid New York Mets and Los Angeles Rams fan and could tell you any statistic about either of them.  Danny had a fabulous memory, from sports trivia to songs from the 70’s and 80’s.  His greatest joy, however, came from coaching.  He coached JV basketball at Greenwich for 30 unblemished years and as a JV baseball coach, and assistant Varsity baseball coach for as many.  Dan was known for his extraordinary knowledge of  and expertise in the game, his integrity and fairness, and his ability to interact with players, parents, and rival coaches as well.  Dan truly cared about his players, each and every one of them, and afforded each the opportunity to grow as both a player and a human being.  In fact, kindness defined Danny to everyone he knew. Like his entire family, Danny was a huge animal lover and had countless cats and dogs for his entire life, including Whiskers, Shumway and Peanut.

Dan was a member of the Men’s Auxillary of the Greenwich VFW, Post 7291, the Greenwich Elks Lodge #2223, past president of the Greenwich Athletic Association and one of the founders and president of the Wasaren League summer baseball association, as well as a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenwich.

Dan’s immediate family was small but the love he had for them, his extended family and his countless friends was immeasurable.  He is survived by his beloved sister, Deborah Flynn Brophy, his special friend and brother-in law, Peter Brophy, his “favorite” niece, Jenna Brophy and her boyfriend Nick Goodman, and his treasured nephew, Jimmy Brophy, his aunt Carol Karp, his honorary aunt, Betty Dixson, as well as by his best friend and cousin, Leo Flynn and his wife MaryBeth, Jake, Tabatha and family, Lindsey, Alex and family, Chris and family and Jason Flynn, as well as many other remarkable, wonderful cousins and friends.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, his aunts and uncles, cousins Edward and Donald Nash, Bud and Jim Kinyon and Kyle Karp as well as numerous friends, the two most recent being Randy Jennings and Ken “Skell” Skellie.

The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to Dr. Edward Liebers, Kathy, Bernie and the rest of his fabulous staff as well as to the staff of the Operating Room and the ICU at Saratoga Hospital, whose care and compassion allowed us four additional years with Danny.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 17th from 1-3 pm and 5-8 pm at Flynn Brothers. Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main Street, Greenwich, NY, 12834.

A mass of  a Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 18th at 11:30 am, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Greenwich, with the Reverend Martin Fisher officiating.

Spring burial in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Greenwich will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that any donations in Dan’s name be made to the SPCA of Upstate New York, 588 Queensbury Avenue, Queensbury, NY 12804.
