Mary Hughes

Obituary of Mary Laura Hughes

Mary Laura Hughes, born on July 29, 1952, in Cambridge, NY to Philip and Mary Helen Hughes, peacefully passed away at her home on June 30th, after a short but mighty battle with lung cancer. She will be remembered as a loving mother/grandmother, compassionate nurse, and a lover of all animals and flowers.

Mary’s career as a nurse touched the lives of many, as she provided care and comfort to those in need. Her kind and empathetic nature made her beloved by her patients and their families alike. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and healing.

Outside her work, Mary found solace in nature. Her love for animals and flowers was evident in her beautiful garden, which she loved to tend. The birds and stray animals that lived nearby knew her as a friend and knew she would always welcome them to her sanctuary.

Mary had a sweet tooth like no other. When shopping, her grocery cart always included ice cream, candy, and chocolate bars. If you visited her, she always had a full candy jar to share. She also loved Cumberland Farms iced hazelnut decaf coffee. Anyone coming to visit knew that she’d welcome you, especially if you brought her this favorite drink.

Above all, Mary cherished her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Mary is survived by her 3 children, son, Alfred Getty (Jessica), and daughters Shelly Getty-Becerril (Valente) and Kelly Flewelling. She is also survived by her grandchildren Dacoda Jones, Amber Getty, Kaitlyn Getty, Audri Getty, Casey Jones (Dylan), Karyssa Hurd (Stephen), Mikayla Hurd, Cameron Becerril, Jessica Benoit (Jeremiah), and PJ Flewelling (Nikki), as well as many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Mary is also survived by her two brothers, Mike Hughes (Barbara), and Frances (Skipper) Joseph Hughes.

A special thanks to all that have provided love and care to support Mom during her battle with cancer, and especially to her daughter-in-law Jessica Getty for her endless devotion to making sure our mother had the best care possible.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Mary’s memory to an animal organization of your choice or The American Cancer Society.
