Obituary of John Jay Sullivan
John Jay Sullivan Jr. of Saratoga Springs, New York, died after suffering a severe fall November 25, 2014. He was 69 years old.
Born in Passaic, New Jersey August 5, 1945, Jay was the son of John Jay Sullivan and Alice Brett Sullivan. He graduated from Passaic High School in 1963 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to attend Monmouth College. Jay served one enlistment in the United States Marine Corp 1966 through 1970, achieving the rank of sergeant, and was a Vietnam Veteran.
He opened the John Barleycorn Tavern in Lake George, New York with his brother Bill, and they ran the business until 1985. Jay was active with the Lake George Recreation Commission, coaching baseball and football for several years. He was also a member of the Lake George Volunteer Fire Department. He later worked for Race Mark Inc. in Malta, New York, and for the New York Racing Association until his retirement.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Shannon Mower and her husband Rob; three grandchildren, Michaela, Johnna, and Shawna; and his son, John Jay Sullivan III and his wife Mariella; two brothers, Robert W. and William J. (Valerie); two sisters, Elizabeth C. and Mary Ellen Cassidy (Marshall). He was predeceased by his former wife, Susan Heunemann.
