Obituary of Daniel J. Hewitt

On February 4, 2017, Daniel J. Hewitt, of the Town of Saratoga, passed away having completed his journey through this life. Dan was born in Victory Mills, NY on October 3, 1932 and was 84 years of age at his death. Dan is survived by his wife Anna Helton Hewitt with whom he had celebrated 64 years of marriage. Also surviving are two sons born of their marriage, Michael (Marcie) and Kevin (Mindy) Hewitt. Additional survivors include two sisters, Mary LaMora and Joan Fitch; as well as 11grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Mary Sullivan Hewitt; his brothers, Frederick Hewitt Jr. and Robert Hewitt; paternal grandparents, Edward and Anna Hathaway and maternal grandparents, Cornelius and Elizabeth Sullivan, who were important parts of his childhood. He resided in the village of Schuylerville for many years, but lived in the Town of Saratoga the majority of his life, save for the time in the military and short residence in Round Lake and Glens Falls. Dan was a 1949 graduate of Schuylerville Central School and entered the military shortly thereafter. He served in the US Navy from 1949 to 1953. He received training in Sonar, and attained NCO status of Petty Officer 2nd in that specialty. Following completion of the anti-submarine school in Key West, FL he was assigned to the USS Power, DD839, attached to the Atlantic Fleet, for the duration of his enlistment, ending in 1953. Following his discharge Dan was employed for a short time in construction and the paper industry. In 1956 he became a representative for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, continuing until his retirement from the company in 1993. He continued as a financial consultant until 2001, when he fully retired. During his career with John Hancock he attained designations as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant from the American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. In addition he completed a number of advanced training workshops at the John Hancock home office in Boston. Dan received several awards from his company during his career, based on quality of business, client service and sales achievements. He also served as instructor for the Life Underwriter Training Council, moderating sales classes available to representatives from all companies. In addition he served a term as President of the Tri-County Life Underwriters and regional Vice President for the New York State Life Underwriters, an organization for professionals in the field. His community interests included, Charter Member and longtime President of the Old Saratoga Athletic Assoc., President of Saratoga County Babe Ruth League, Presidnt of the Tri-County American Legion Baseball League, Exempt Member of Schuyler Hose, one of the three original organizers of the Turning Point Parade, serving as its coordinator for several years, the originator of the Regional History Task Force and he initiated the organization of the Schuylerville Area Chamber of Commerce and was a Charter Member thereof. He served as coach and manager in youth baseball programs at several levels, including Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion Baseball. Principally due to the talent of the players on the teams he was with, several championships were won at local, district, regional and state levels. Involvement with the players on the various teams was of great enjoyment for him. Dan had a keen interest in the history of, and love for, his country. He was an avid reader of books and materials devoted to history, and the country's earlier years. Of particular interest to him was the American Revolution and the important role this area played in it. In addition his history interests included the patriots and heroes of the country's military past as well as the pioneers who faced such tremendous odds and perils in the development and growth of the United States. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, February 10, 2017 at Notre Dame-Visitation Church with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating. Burial will follow at 12pm in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7pm Thursday at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville, NY.
