Obituary of Charles "Pepper" Martin

Charles “Pepper” Martin, 88, a former resident of Blodgett Rd. in Greenwich, died Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home in Ft. Edward. Born October 5, 1923 in Schuylerville, he was the son of the late George and Nellie Baker Martin. Charles tried out for and went to training camp for the Brooklyn Dodgers just before the war broke out. He was a US Marine Veteran having served during WWII and was in the VMF221 in the South Pacific. After the war he played semi pro baseball with the Saratoga Colts. He had been employed at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. in Mechanicville, ran Martin’s Roofing for 30 years, and with his wife ran Martin’s Greenhouse in Ft. Miller. He worked for NYRA at Saratoga Racecourse for many years, and served on the Schuylerville School Board in the mid 1980’s. He was interested in all sports and enjoyed bowling for Van, Voast & Leoanard at the Olde Saratoga Lanes and in a couples league with his wife. One of his passions was the Irish Sweepstakes. He was a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville. Charles was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline Drew Martin in 2005; 1 son, Craig Martin; 3 brothers, Robert, Douglas, and John Martin; and 1 sister, Eleanor Martin. Survivors include 2 daughters, Tamaris (Iliff) Dolton of Greenwich and Marina (Brian) Wilson of Gansevoort; 1 son, Dane Kevin Martin of Greenwich; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Sunday from 1-3pm and Monday from 12-1pm at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. A funeral service will be held at 1pm Monday, March 19, 2012 at the funeral home with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Schuylerville. Memorials can be made in his memory to Notre Dame-Visitation Church.
