Obituary of Donald McGrouty

Donald McGrouty, 84, a resident of Route 29, Greenwich, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Facility in Argyle with his family at his side. Born January 14, 1928 in Greenwich he was the son of the late Earl and Myra McNeil McGrouty, and had been a life long Greenwich resident. Don proudly served in the US Navy as a ship’s cook. He then worked at the S & T Paper Mill in Greenwich and in 1973 became the full-time manager of The Green Acres Tavern in Greenwich. He was a member of the Greenwich VFW and American Legion, the Rough & Ready, and Elks Lodge BPOE #2223. He was a fan of Saratoga Horse Racing, 49ers Football Team, and most of all loved cooking and socializing with people. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Gertrude Barber McGrouty; sisters, Arlene Jeffords, Marilyn Langhoffer, and Blanche Bain; and his brother Arnold “Spike” McGrouty. Survivors include his wife Donna Clark-McGrouty of Greenwich; 2 daughters, Coleen (Bruce) Kyer Ely and Marilyn (Richard Jr.) Almy, both of Greenwich; 3 sisters, Ruth Waite, Virginia (Elton) Austin and Veronica (Raymond) Coon; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call from 2-4pm SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2012 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich. A reception will follow at 5pm at Green Acres Tavern. A graveside service will be held at 10am Monday, April 16, 2012 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville with Rev. Keith Mann, officiating. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Pleasant Valley Nursing Facility for the love, care, and compassion given to Donald. Memorials can be made in his memory to the Greenwich Fire Department or the Middle Falls Fire Department.
