Obituary of Gertrude D. Allen

Gertrude D. Allen of Easton, NY, surrounded by her family, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013 at Saratoga Hospital. She was born in Wood River, Nebraska to Harriet and Edson Durfee who predeceased her as did Warner Durfee, a brother, all of Chittenago, NY. She was also predeceased by daughter-in-law Paula Allen. Survivors include Art Durfee, a brother, Norman Allen of Easton, NY, her husband of 68 years, along with children Judy Moore (Joe), Norma Rapp (Allen), George Allen, Eric Allen (Leslie), Cindy Bulger (Tim), 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Gertrude was a graduate of Cornell University, taught briefly before devoting her life to family and volunteering in community and church. . She was generous in sharing her time, talents, and energy. She spent years as a 4-H leader. She was a Trustee of the Easton Library and served many years as board president. The Easton United Methodist was also an integral part of Gertrude’s life. She loved to make things grow whether it was nurturing people young and old or her flower and vegetable gardens. Her other interests included sewing, reading or socializing at Easton Book Club. During this past year the family appreciates the loving care Gertrude received at Wesley Health Care Center and Saratoga Hospital. She was known everywhere for her radiant smile which we will all miss. Visitation hours will be held at Flynn Brothers Inc. Funeral Home 80 Main Street, Greenwich, NY on Monday, July 15, from 5 -7 PM. A Memorial service is planned for Tuesday, July 16 at 3 PM at the Easton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Virginia Cornell, officiating with reception to follow.
