Obituary of Jane T. Benoit

Lifelong Greenwich resident Jane (Tomlinson) Benoit passed away shortly after midnight on Thursday, September 26th, 2013. Jane was born April 19, 1932 in Cambridge, NY and graduated from Greenwich Central School as valedictorian of the class of 1950; she began working the next day as legal secretary for attorney John Duell. She also worked for the Washington County Children’s Court for a number of years. After Duell’s untimely death, she continued with the firm, working for Judge Julian Orton and later for attorney James Catalfimo. After a career of 50 years, she worked another eight years in various capacities for the Greenwich Journal and Salem Press. Poor health eventually forced her to retire. Jane took great pride and enjoyment in her work. She also found pleasure in reading, needlepoint, and crocheting. Jane was a lifelong learner who was intensely interested in educational issues and local history, and was happiest when she was reading, whether it was poetry or the latest John Grisham novel. She maintained her mental clarity until the final moment. Jane had a remarkable sense of humor and excelled in clever word play. For her lively wit, compassion, remarkable memory, and goodness of heart, she will be long remembered. Jane is survived by two sons, Alan and Peter Benoit, both of Greenwich, as well as Alan’s wife Rebecca and a granddaughter, Maureen, of Berea, Ohio. Jane was pre-deceased by her mother, Hazel (Manchester) Tomlinson, and father Frank Tomlinson. The family plans to announce a memorial service for Jane; its date has yet to be decided.
