Obituary of Harold Spiezio Sr.

Harold P. Spiezio, Sr., 92, a lifelong resident of Middle Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born Nov. 28, 1920 at his family home, he was the son of Phillip and Mary CoFrancisco Spiezio. He married Doris Plue on Feb. 13, 1942 and they had been married for 71 years. Harold served with the United States Army in the 88th Blue Devil Division from 1942 – 1945. He received the Bronze Star (Attachment Triple), the Good Conduct Medal, European Campaign Medal, and American Campaign Conduct Medal. Harold had been employed for 32 years as a supervisor at the Stevens and Thompson Paper Mill in Middle Falls. In 1972 he joined the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and retired as sergeant in 1984. In 1983 he received the NYS Deputy of the Year Award and the NYS Medal of Valor. He was a member and past president of the Washington County Fire Police Association, Charter member and founder of the Easton Greenwich Rescue Squad, Middle Falls Fire Department, member and past Commander of the VFW Post # 7291 in Greenwich, Post # 063 American Legion in Cambridge, and Lodge # 2223 BPOE in Greenwich of which he received the Elk of the Year Award. Other awards include the Washington County Liberty Bell in 1998, and award from the VFW of the United States for his outstanding public service to the community of Greenwich. His passion in life was his wife and five children. He was an avid craftsman who spent many hours in his beloved shop doing his woodwork after retiring. Honesty, trust, professionalism was his motto which he lived by and instilled in his family. The community which he respected played an important role in his life and his door was always open and his heart welcomed one and all that stopped to say hello. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Louis, Eugene and James Spiezio and sisters, Amelia Conkey and Fannie Talmadge. Survivors include his wife Doris Plue Spiezio; his children, Philip “Skip” Spiezio, Harold “Non” Spiezio and his companion Valorie, Linda “Tootie” and life companion Michael, Dominick “Nick” Spiezio and fiancé Patty, and Vincent “Vinnie” and life companion Carrie; a sister Patricia Ivanoff; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 am Wednesday, Oct.9, 2013 at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main Street Greenwich, with the Rev. Martin Fisher officiating Interment services with military honors will follow at 11 am at the Saratoga National Cemetery. Following the interment service, all are welcome to join the family for a reception at the Elks Lodge on Route 40. Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. He will be sadly missed by all the hearts he touched in his 92 years but will live on forever in memories.
