Obituary of John (Jack) Ross
John (Jack) A. Ross passed away November 1, 2013 at home. He was born in Greenwich, N.Y. on March 29, 1927, the son of Andrew and Minnie (Young) Ross. He is survived by his loving wife Hazel (Babe) to whom he was married for 62 years, and their children Mark (Erika) of Flagstaff, AZ, Deborah of Wellsboro, PA, Paul (Mary) of Valrico, FL and John Jr. (Cheri) of Sandy Hook, CT, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his sister Marie Collins of Albany. He was predeceased by his sister Isabelle Brogle of Holyoke. Jack graduated from Whitehall High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York, College at Cortland and a Masterâs Degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He is a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Midway. He was a teacher in Greenwich for seventeen years before becoming the elementary principal for 18 years. In retirement, he and Babe traveled extensively across North America as a railroad tour director. Jack was an active member of the community being involved in the Lions Club, B.P.O.E. Elks, American Legion, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus, Greenwich Fire Department, Washington County Childrenâs Committee, Empire State Passengers Association and as a Director of the National Association of Railroad Passengers. He also played clarinet in numerous marching and concert bands. Calling hours will be held at Flynn Brothers Funeral Home in Greenwich from 4pm-7pm on Monday, November 4. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10am on Tuesday, November 5 at St. Josephâs Catholic Church in Greenwich. Interment will follow at St. Josephâs cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jackâs memory may be made to the Greenwich Central School Scholarship Fund or the St. Josephâs Church restoration project.
