Obituary of Gerald J. Bulger

Gerald J. Bulger, 88, a lifelong resident of Greenwich passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at home surrounded by his family . Born July 17, 1925 in Cambridge, NY, he was a son of George and Anna Bailey Bulger. Gerald was drafted into service in October 1943 and chose the Navy. He was assigned to the USS Orestes as part of the 7th fleet in the Philippines. On Dec, 30, 1944, Gerald was seriously wounded resulting in an amputation of his right leg. He received several service medals, including the Purple Heart. Gerald graduated from Greenwich Central School in 1948. He received his Associates Degree in bookkeeping from Becker College in 1950. Gerald was a member and officer of various civic organizations including American Legion Post #515, VFW Post #7291, K of C Council #1239, and Greenwich Little League. In addition, he was a communicant of St. Joseph's church in Greenwich. He was active in local politics serving as a Greenwich Village Trustee for 3 consecutive terms. Jerry was an avid sports enthusiast of which included attending school sporting events, little league games, Notre Dame football games, cheering on his Fighting Irish and Detroit Tigers, and was an avid baseball card collector. Later in life Jerry enjoyed attending reunions with surviving crew members of his WWII ship the USS Orestes. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Wanda Moss Bulger, a son Daniel Patrick Bulger, a brother Thomas Bulger, and son-in-law Christopher McCormick. Surviving is one son, Timothy Bulger and his wife Cynthia Allen Bulger of Easton, three daughters, Patricia C. Campito ( William Milkins) of Clifton Park, Constance M. Gangel of Greenwich, Susan N. McCormick of Greenwich; Grandchildren, Daniel, Devin, Kieran, and Eamon Bulger, Bailey and Connor Campito, Jace and Jamian Gangel; Patrick, Collin and Quinn McCormick. Also surviving is his close companion Beverly Connor and her family. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Budnikas, Visiting Nurses and Community Hospice. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Joseph's Church, with Rev. Martin Fisher officiating. Spring interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, January 3, 2014 from 4 - 7 pm at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich. Memorials in his name may be made to The American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY, 12211 Friends are invited to join the family following the funeral Saturday at the Greenwich VFW on Abeel Ave., Greenwich.
