Obituary of Glenn Leonard Birkeland

Glenn Leonard Birkeland, 74, passed away Sunday December 17,2023, at his residence in Vermont.

He was born in Manhattan, NY on February 18, 1949 to the late Alfred Birkeland and Ingrid DeGeorge.

Glenn served proudly in the United States Army from 1968-1971. For many years he did construction work and was a member of the Dock Builders Union. He attended FDR High School and achieved his GED while serving in the Army. One of his greatest joys was listening to music and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his nephews, Gregory, and Theodore Greve; brothers-in-law, Alf Flodsand, Wayne Peterson, and Jim Hesney.

He is survived by his children, Diane (Sigfried) Bernhardt, Lisa (Matthew) Shohen, Cheryl Schempp and Kristyn (Brian Harris) Birkeland; grandchildren, Elke and Angelika Bernhardt, Ashley and Emily Shohen, Alyssa and Louden Schempp; siblings, Arlene (Ted) Greve, Lillian Peterson, June Flodsand Sharon Hesney and Nancy (Dan) Lovaglio; partner, Martha Beyersdorf as well as several nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Flynn Bros, Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave, Schuylerville, NY, 12871 with Pastor Scott Cutting officiating. Family and friends may call from 11 to 1 pm prior to his service at the funeral home.

A celebration of his life will be held from 3 to 6 pm at the VFW, Abeel Ave, Greenwich, NY, 12834.
