Obituary of Billie E. McFarlen

Billie E. McFarlen, 97, a resident of the Home of the Good Shephard in Malta, entered into the presence of her Savior, Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Sulfur Springs, Texas on July 13, 1916 to Harvey and Pearl Nuckols, she grew up in Brownsville, Texas and attended the University of Texas. After marrying Mr. Michael McFarlen in 1940 the couple moved to Trinidad as Mr. Mc Farlen flew with Pan American World Airways. After the Second World War the couple along with their young daughter, Deborah moved to Stockholm, Sweden, one of a few American families based there working for American Overseas Airlines. Because of Mr. McFarlen's work they lived in many states here in this country finally retiring to San Angelo, Texas. Mrs. McFarlen was an active member of the First Baptist Church and a Hospital volunteer. Mrs. McFarlen enjoyed traveling and had many adventures around the world, sometimes accompanied by her daughter. In 1968 she made a trip around the world in the company of her aunt and mother. She also traveled to China, Turkey, Bali and Africa. Mrs. McFarlen was predeceased by her husband, parents and brother, Harvey Nuckols. Left to honor her memory are her daughter, Deborah (Charles) Bailey of Greenwich, three grandsons and seven great-grandchildren: Christopher (Catherine) Bailey and their daughters Isabelle and Emily of Corinth, NY; Peter (Jennifer) Bailey and their daughters Mara, Eden and Anna of Argyle, NY; and Jeremy (Danielle) Bailey and their son Ian and daughter Campbell of Schuylerville, NY. She is also survived by a cousin Ann (Gary) Chandler of Amherst, NH and two nieces, Martha Ann (Bill) Romoser of Fort Valley and Joan Smith of San Antonia, Texas as well as several nephews. A funeral service will be held at 5pm Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Fort Miller Reformed Church, with Rev. Charles Bailey, officiating. Spring burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Miller, NY. Friends may call on Monday from 4-5pm prior to the service at the church. Memorials can be made in her memory to the Fort Miller Reformed Church, 40 Brophy Rd., Greenwich, NY 12834. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caregivers at Home of the Good Shephard and Saratoga Hospital for the wonderful care given to Billie.
