Obituary of Harry Karpiak

Harry Karpiak, 88, of Cambridge, NY passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY following a brief illness. Born March 12, 1926 in Watervliet, NY he was the son of the late Demian and Matrona (Hudak) Karpiak. Mr. Karpiak attended Colorado State College and was a graduate of the University of Missouri.. He taught Science in Hoosick Falls and Agriculture at Washington Academy in Salem, NY. He later retired as an Acting Bureau Chief for the State Education Department. He was active with the FFA and mentoring programs throughout his career. Harry joined the US Marines at the age of 17 and was a WWII veteran having served during the Pacific Theater and on the USS Alaska. He was active in the Centenary United Methodist Church in Greenwich and had been involved with their Organ Fund and Golf Tournaments. He was recently a member of the Stump Church in North Cambridge. He was very involved with the initiation of the Greenwich Outreach Program and was an active Mason. In addition to his parents, Harry is predeceased by siblings, Zenovia Walko, Pauline Gachosh, Peter, Michael, Paul, Walter, Daniel, John and David Karpiak; and his first wife Muriel Karpiak. He is survived by his devoted wife Arlene; and is the beloved brother of Stephanie (Philip) Karmazyn of Greenwich, Mary Foster of Canandaigua, NY, Nicholas Karpiak of Katy, TX and Basil Karpiak of Ancram, NY; many nephews and nieces, including devoted caregivers Barbara Richardson and Libby Nessle. Friends may call from 5-7pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich. A funeral service and spring burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please offer a contribution in Harry’s memory to a charity of your choice.
