Obituary of Albert P. Young

Albert P. Young, 90, a resident of Victory Mills, died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital. Born August 14, 1923 in Manhatten, NY he was the son of the late Henry and Rebecca O’Grady Young. He was a graduate of Schuylerville High School at the age of 16 and attended an airplane mechanics school in Baltimore, MD. He joined the Army during WWII and saw service in England, France, and Germany, and was in the Conflict of Omaha Beach, Normandy. He was transferred to the Air Force as an airplane mechanic and was honorably discharged from Air Force Unit 367, Fighter Squadron 3914 as staff sergeant. Al worked at West Vacco Paper Mill for 26 years and then went to work for the NY State Thruway as Chief Lock Operator at Lock 5 in Schuylerville. He was a member of Old Saratoga Seniors, Country Round and Square Dance Assoc. and was a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville. He was so proud to have built his own home and enjoyed all the flowers and gardens he planted and he enjoyed feeding the birds. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Young; 2 brothers, George and Lawrence Young; 3 aunts, Agnes Young (who raised him from birth) Mary Young and Viola Young Steglitz; 1 step sister, Rita Young Ahearn; and 1 stepson, Howard Patterson. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Patterson Young, who he married in October 2002, of Victory Mills; 1 stepdaughter, Royanne Patterson; 1 step grandson, Howard (Kristie) Patterson; 2 great grandchildren, Patrick and Jessica Patterson; 2 stepsisters, Anne Marie (Fred) Schiller of Pound Ridge, NY and Monica Sleshinger of Sommers, NY; many nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held at 11am Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville, with Rev. William Cahill, officiating. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 9-11am prior to the service at the funeral home.
