Obituary of Donald K. Coons

Donald K. Coons of 217 North Broadway, died Sunday October 19th, 2014 at the Saratoga Hospital. He was 81 years old. Donald was born in Mechanicville on November 6th, 1932 the only son of Kenneth J. and Charlotte Metcalfe Coons. He was married to the former Katherine McMahon of Saratoga Springs. Donald attended schools in Schaghticoke and Schuylerville and was a 1951 graduate of Schuylerville High School. He served two years in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. After his service from the Army he was a draftsman at General Electric in Schenectady for ten years. During the next fifty years, he was a self-employed carpenter building and working on many homes in the Saratoga and Glens Falls area. He was also the Building Inspector for the Town of Northumberland for ten years. In recent years he enjoyed recycling old wood and making benches and other wood products for his family and friends. He enjoyed his ’66 Thunderbird and watching NASCAR on the weekends. Donald was predeceased by his parents and his sister Lois Sheldon. He is survived by his wife, Kathy and seven children. Two sons – Kenneth (Tina) Coons of Gansevoort and Brian (Katie) Coons of Wilton; five daughters – Theresa Workman of Gansevoort, Kathy (Paul) Bouchard of Galway, Laurie (Pete) Bromley of Wilton, Donna (Bruce) Hoag of Gansevoort and Katrina (Will) Railton of Schuylerville. He is also survived by two stepchildren – John Amo of Saratoga Springs and Maura (Steve) Alling of Schuylerville; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters – Beverly Boyce of Schaghticoke; Susan (Charlie) Wildberger of Schaghticoke; and Alice (Leo) Collum of Melrose. Three brother-in-laws - Allen Sheldon of Bennington, VT; John and Edward McMahon of Saratoga Springs; and one sister-in-law Elizabeth McCarthy of Saratoga Springs. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He also has his faithful dogs – Snoopy and Chloe. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday October 23, 2014, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. There will be no calling hours.
