Obituary of Ashton Bruce Cornell

Ashton Bruce Cornell, 83 of Victory Mills, NY, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 at Wesley Health Care Center from Alzheimer's Disease. He was born on January 5, 1931 at Glens Falls Hospital to Ashton and Ethel (Smith) Cornell. At twelve Bruce was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent six months at the Sanitorium at Saranac Lake, NY. He attended school in Argyle before moving to Schuylerville where he graduated from Schuylerville High School in 1949. He played basketball and was on the track team. He learned how to cut meat at the Oneida Market in Schuylerville, and was a meat cutter at Sulli's Market, and was also employed at Central Market in Northville, Gloversville, and Saratoga Springs. He was elected to a four year term as Town Councilman, Town of Saratoga 1980-1983, and again from 1995-2005. He was Mayor of the Village of Victory 1991-1994 and retired at age 62. Many remember the soups and famous finger rolls he made at his Goodie Shop. He had a photography business called ABC Photos for many years and taught some of his daughters how to develop film into pictures. Bruce served on the General Schuyler Emergency Squad, Easton Greenwich Squad and Ft. Edward Squad. He was a life-time member of the David Nevins Fire Company, served on Saratoga County RSVP Advisory Board, was President of the Friends of the Battlefield, and was a member of the Quaker Springs United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Virginia Cornell and six daughters, Sherry Doubleday, (Jim) Schuylerville; Barbara Bussing,(Ray)Greenwich; Margaret Grimes,(Troy) Hamilton, MT, Karen Fogg, (Bill) Kingman, AZ; Janice Cornell, Saratoga Springs, and Lisa McKernon, Schuylerville, and one son, Bruce T. Cornell, LasVegas, NV; twelve grandchildren; Jimmy Doubleday, Amanda, Julie, and Ryan Bussing, Adam Maxwell, Jenna Huff, Salina, Misty, and Brett Fogg, Bridget Critelli, Lyndsey Humiston and Patrick McKernon; seven great grandchildren; and his stepsons, David, Scott, and Michael Forrest. He was predeceased by one grandchild, Dru Doubleday. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave, Schuylerville. A Memorial Service will be held at the Quaker Springs UMC on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or General Schuylerville Emergency Squad.
