Robert Lanoue

Obituary of Robert F. Lanoue

Robert F. Lanoue, aged 90, of Palmetto, Florida and Cohoes, New York, died peacefully on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 after a short illness. He was under the excellent care of The Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, Wesley Health Care Center and Community Hospice of Saratoga.

He had returned to Cohoes after many years in Florida to spend his final summer, fall, and winter in the care and companionship of his family, especially his devoted sister Ruthie. He will be spending this spring and eternity with his loving wife, Muriel.

Bob Lanoue was born on September 4th, 1927 in Cohoes, New York.  He was the fourth child born to Marion and Alfred Lanoue.  As all his brothers did, Bob joined the Navy, serving during WWII at sea in the Pacific Theater under combat, and during the occupation of Japan. He re-enlisted during the Korean War and remained in the Navy until shortly after he married Muriel Begin. They remained a devoted couple raising their two sons, first in Cohoes, then in Melrose, NY. Bob worked for many years at the Mohawk Paper Mills, afterward returning to the water as a merchant marine working on commercial tug boats and captaining barges on the canal system and coastal waters of New York.

Retirement brought the freedom of wintering in Florida and spending the summers in their RV. For many years they were happy campers at the Deer Run campground outside Mechanicville, NY, where they often cared for their granddaughter, Sapientia and her sister, Seranie. Bob and Muriel eventually settled at the Piney Point Estates in Palmetto, Florida and developed many close friendships there. They were active members of the American Legion, The VFW, The Veterans of Lansingburgh, and The Cohoes Rod and Gun Club.

Until her passing in 2009, he and Muriel were married for 59 years. He is also predeceased by his brothers, Lewis and William Lanoue, and his sister June Gaudette. In addition to his sister, Ruth, he is survived by his brother, Frank (Agnes) Lanoue of Zephyrhills, FL, two sons, Robert (Brenda) Lanoue of Greenwich, NY, Mark (Lucy) of Melrose, NY, and granddaughters, Sapientia Thomas (Katie) of Cohoes, NY and Jessica (Phil) Coughlin of Melrose NY. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews of the Lanoue, Gaudette and Foster families.

His family would like to take this opportunity to thank The Albany Stratton VA Medical Center and the many caring, compassionate doctors, nurses and medical professionals who provide exemplary care for our Veterans, Wesley Health Care Center (2 Springs, in particular) and Community Hospice of Saratoga for the excellent transitional care they provide.

Donations in his memory can be given to Community Hospice of Saratoga at: 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866

No viewing is scheduled and there will be a private funeral service at The Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery, later in the year.
