Obituary of Richard Worthington

Richard (Dick) Worthington, 75, a resident of Greenwich died Sunday February 5, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy following a short illness. Born August 4 1936 in Southampton, NY, he was the son of Elwood and Catherine (Reilly) Worthington. Dick’s early years were spent in East Hampton, NY, where he graduated from high school in 1954. For a short time he attended The School of Pharmacy at the University of Buffalo. However, he decided teaching was the profession he wanted to pursue and graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 1961. While attending Potsdam he met and married his wife, Louise. He taught a few years in Canton, NY. In 1964 he started teaching in Greenwich and continued to do so until his retirement in 1994. An avid sports fan, Dick was part of the Greenwich sports program for many years. He coached eighth grade basketball and was one of the founders of the Elks eighth grade basketball tournament. Also he performed various tasks as part of the football program such as filming games. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Elks and the Emergency Relief Committee. A devoted family man who loved his children and grandchildren very much, he liked nothing better than to brag about their accomplishments. Other likes included rooting for the Yankees, doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and traveling. The last trip he and Louise took was to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010, it completed their traveling to all fifty states. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Catherine Dargie. Survivors include his wife Louise; three daughters, Katharyn (Christian) Bischof of Darmstadt, Germany, Susan Worthington of Raleigh, NC, and Sarah (George) Denaker of Greenwich; five grandchildren, Anneliese and Sebastian Bischof and Riley, Hannah and George Denaker; two sisters, Carole DiGangi of Clearwater, FL and Judy Maguire of Hampton Bays, NY. A memorial service will be held at 1pm Saturday February 18, 2012 at the United Church of Greenwich to celebrate Dick’s life. The family suggests memorials in his name to the Easton-Greenwich Rescue Squad, PO Box 84, Greenwich, NY 12834 or to the United Church of Greenwich, Salem St., Greenwich, NY 12834.
