Rick Mellen

Obituary of Rick Mellen

Richard P. Mellen, 75, was called home to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ April 17, 2019.

Rick was born Feb. 25, 1944 to Millicent and David Mellen of Victory Mills, NY. After graduating from Schuylerville High School in 1962, Rick joined the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Vietnam War before earning an honorable discharge.

He and his wife of 46 years, Priscilla Untiedt Gay Mellen, served as missionaries with the Wycliffe Bible Translators. Their work brought them to many different countries, including Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico. Their mission work also blessed them with lifelong friends all over the world, including a young man named Benito whom they considered to be their son. They retired to Dallas Texas where they have been living for the past several years.

In addition to his beloved wife Priscilla, Rick is survived by stepsons Glenn (Debbie) Gay of Wisconsin, Edwin Gay of Virginia, and Joe Gay of Western NY; siblings Michael (Josie) Mellen of California, James (Donna) Mellen of Schuylerville, Marion (Wayne) Barton and Patti (Mark) Booth of Victory Mills; grandsons Iain, David, Peter, and Michael. Rick also has many nieces and nephews, and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by sisters Dorothy Soderberg, Sharon LaPier, and Arletta Stein.

The family is deeply grateful to Gene and Cyndy Delahunt of Arkansas for caring for Rick in his final days, and for their continued dedication in caring for Priscilla.

A memorial service will be held at the Old Saratoga Reformed Church (48 Pearl Street in Schuylerville, NY) on Saturday, May 11th at 4pm with the Rev. Joyce deVelder officiating.
