Obituary of Frederick Kilmer Heighton

Frederick Kilmer Heighton died Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the age 75, after a brief illness. Kilmer is preceded in death by his wife Susan. He is survived by three children, Christine Horton, David Heighton, Jocelyn Oswald (Dan); two grandchildren, Joshua Horton and Alex Quigan (Alyssa); a great grandchild, Alivia; a brother, David Heighton (Kathy), two sisters, Lois Betts (Curt) and Carrie McDermott (Vern); and many close friends. Born in Schuylerville, N.Y., Kilmer received a Masters in Education from New York University. Additionally, he was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant by the Netherlands America Commission for Education Exchange. Kilmer had a passion for education, travel, horses and Starbuck's coffee. Not only was he a teacher, a track coach, and a professor, he most importantly was a mentor to many students here and abroad. His true legacy as an academic was shaping his students into good, intelligent people. A memorial service will be held at 5pm Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Red Trillium Society, PO Box 12581, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709.
